The show is set up where it starts with city qualifiers, each group of athletes is put in a region for city competitions in different American states. The city qualifiers have six obstacles, if you complete all six obstacle you're guaranteed a spot in the city finals. But if you don't finish it's based off who finishes the furthest the fastest because only thirty athletes and the top five women move on to the city finals. In the city finals there are ten obstacles including the six from qualifying and then four brutal upper body obstacles. Only fifteen competitors and the top two women move on to Mount Midoryiama after the finals so whoever goes the furthest the fastest move on. On stage one all the competitors from all the regions compete on the same course which is timed and you have to complete the course to move on. If you survive stage one you move on to the challenging stage two which also has a time limit and you have to finish to move on. If you make it to stage three which has no time limit you have to complete a set of brutal upper body obstacles to move on to stage four. If you make it to stage four you have to complete a 75 ft. rope climb in thirty seconds to achieve total victory and win one million dollars. However if multiple competitors achieve total victory they all split the prize money.
